Kerala Recipies No Comments

Tea time brings in innovations with whatever ingredients you have within your reach.. I think its a practice that has been going on since the days of our grand parents… They were really innovative with the food they came out with within their limited resources… This is a recipe my ammama (grandmother) used to make…

Preparation:
  1. Chop the bananas into small pieces and keep it aside.
  2. Grind the coconut with some water into a fine paste.
  3. Mix the rice flour, cardamom powder, Sugar and Salt
  4. Into this mixture add the ground coconut.
  5. Slowly add water into it and mix it well so that there are no lumps.
  6. The batter should have the consistency similar to idli batter
  7. Then put the banana pieces into the batter and mix gently
  8. Now you need to steam this
  9. You could use an idli mold or any other mold fit for steaming.
  10. Grease the mold and pour the batter into it
  11. Steam for 15 – 20 mins
  12. And gently take it out once cooled.
  13. Serve it hot or at room temperature.

Chukku Kappi

Kerala Recipies No Comments

When we were young and got sick there were our grandmothers and mothers used to make us different kinds of home remedies… they used to give us hot kanji and chammanthi for meals and in between they used to give us chukku kappi and different kind of kashayams.. During those times i used to hate drinking it… and I used to drink it with great difficulty… my mom used to put all the medicinal leaves possible that she could get… most importantly she puts Thulasi Ela… When I had tonsillitis my mom had given my the juice of “muyal chevi”.. its a plant grown wildly in our back yard…  and my tonsillitis just vanished… Those are the wonders of such plants…

Chukku, Pepper, Jeerakam and Jaggery that we put in our coffee all has its medicinal values which makes us feel better…
Ingredients:

To Grind

Chukku (Its just dried ginger) – 1/2 inch
Cumin – 1/2 Teaspoon
Pepper corn – 2 or 3
Just put it in the mixer and give it a grind or two in the pulse mode.. It need not be finely powdered
Coffee Powder – 1 Teaspoon
Jaggery (Sharkkara) – 1/3rd of a piece of jaggery (The cylindrical pieces that we get to buy) because I do not want it very sweet
Thulasi Leaves – 7 or 8 (If you can get them)
Water – 2 cups
Preparation:

Put  the jaggery, coffee powder, Thulasi Leaves and the ground ingredients (Chukku, Cumin and Pepper) into water and let it boil. Let it simmer on low flame for 5 mins… till the jaggery melts… and then you can strain the decotion and drink it..
